Separation of Mixtures

A. Magnetic Attraction

Separating mixtures containing magnetic material like iron, cobalt, and nickel

B. Separating Funnel

A mixture of two immiscible liquids can be separated using a separating funnel

immiscible means that the liquids don't dissolve in each other, example: oil and water

C. Decantation

Decantation is a process to separate mixtures by removing a liquid layer that is free of a precipitate, or the solids deposited from a solution

Example:

Sand can be separated from sand water mixture

D. Filtration

Separating mixture of un-dissolved solids from a liquid

E. Evaporation

Separating mixture of dissolved solids from a liquid

F. Distillation

1. Simple Distillation

Simple distillation is a method for separating the solvent from a solution

Example:

Water can be separated from salt solution

This method works because water has a much lower boiling point than salt

2. Fractional Distillation

Fractional distillation is a method for separating a liquid from a mixture of two or more liquids

Example:

Separating crude oil
